Weekend Greetings (aug 26, 2005)

Medama-yaki(目玉焼き): fried egg (literal translation: fried eye ball)

Which came first? The egg, or the chicken? This age-old question has puzzled the minds of countless children, and even adults. I’ve been thinking about this all week. At first I thought of sending you a picture of an egg frying on the asphalt here in Japan’s extraordinarily hot summer and making the statement: “And you thought hell was hot!” But the more I thought about it, the wonder of the egg began filling my mind.

Of course to those who know the Word of God, there is no question that the chicken came first:

And God said, “Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that has life, and FOWL that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven.” And God created great whales, and every living creature that moves, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every WINGED FOWL after his kind. And God saw that it was good. And God blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let FOWL multiply in the earth.”

Did you know the egg is triune, just like its Creator? Father-God, Son-God and Holy Spirit-God are unified and one. All three, Father, Son and Holy Ghost are GOD! So it is with the egg. Shell-egg, white-egg and yolk-egg are unified and one. The shell, white and yolk, all three, are EGG!

One part of the Godhead is/was visible (the Son). One part of the triune egg is visible (the shell).

Two parts of the Godhead are invisible, but very real (the Father and the Holy Ghost). Two parts of the egg are invisible, but very real (the white and yolk).

God and the egg both have a purpose, too. God’s purpose is to have fellowship with man, who was created in God’s very own image. The purpose of the egg is to produce another chicken just like the one who laid it.

YOU are also triune, just like your Creator. You are one, unified being with a purpose to your life. One part of you is visible (body) and two parts are invisible (soul and spirit).

Imagine how excited God was when he said, “Let US (Father, Son and Holy Spirit) make man in our image.” The Father, Son and Holy Spirit each had a turn at breathing the breath of life into Adam’s clay figure. When Adam stood up, God saw a spitting image, perfect likeness, exact image of Himself.

And that’s what eggs do, too! Produce an exact image of the chicken that laid it.

This weekend when you have breakfast and fry, scramble or poach those eggs, why not give some thought to the wonder of the egg, its Creator and yourself? After all, YOU are a good egg!
