Last weekend we had the wonderful opportunity to go to Nagoya, Japan, where we were asked to minister at a local church’s Autumn Conference. We boarded the small JAL plane in Fukuoka and lifted off for an hour-or-so flight to Japan’s third largest metropolis.
During the short flight many people put their heads back, or leaned them forward in order to catch an hour’s worth of winks. Across the aisle and up two seats was this nodding-off young man.
The first thing I noticed about him was his hair ⏤ kind of long, but still stylish, including the side burns, evoking a very relaxed and non-stressful pose. Of course, the next thing I considered was the Word of God: “But the very hairs of your head are all numbered.” Matthew 10:30
There are many kinds of hair noted in the Bible: bristling, tossed hair, plucked hair, ornamental hair, tresses of long hair, broidered hair, and even grey hair, which is considered a crown of glory by God.
My guess is that this young man knows nothing about The Almighty God, but The Almighty God knows all things about him, including the number of hairs on his head! Awesome, don’t you think? Yep, God even knows the number of hairs on your head, too! If you lose one, or even pluck one, God subtracts it and remembers how many remain. If one turns grey, He knows about it. God even knows about the secret known by only you and your hairdresser. The Bible mentions many things that are “numbered,” not just hair. The list includes seed, people, young men, the hosts of heaven and . . .
“Many, O LORD my God, are thy wonderful works (NEB translates this word as ‘wonderful purposes’) which thou hast done, and thy thoughts which are to us-ward: they cannot be reckoned up in order unto thee: if I would declare and speak of them, they are more than can be numbered.” Psalm 40:5
YOU are very important to God. He has a definite plan and purpose for YOUR life. If God is interested enough to remember the number of hairs on your head, you can be sure He is just as interested in what lies ahead of you next week, and the next, and the next.
Why not try something silly with me. Pluck out one of those numbered hairs on your head, hold it up in the light and look at it. Then read this out loud:
(God) “What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?” Psalm 8:4
The hair on your head should be a reminder that Almighty God has you in His thoughts! Why not head to church this next weekend and find out more about the purpose and plans God has for you. Just be sure not to nod-off and miss out on what He says.
